Shiano calls day four of practice at One Buc Place the best one yet. Tampa, FLA – Buccaneers training camp continues, as it will be very telling in hopeful rebounding year. Yesterday the Buccaneers focused more on situational football, rather than basic drills, which they had been doing the prior three days. Offensively, the standouts so far have been players like rookie running back Doug Martin, newly acquired receiver Vincent Jackson, and an improving Josh Freeman. Day four however, added a new player to the standout list, Dallas Clark. While he’s been a familiar face in this league, it’s promising to hear that he’s recovering from his injuries and regaining his ability as a downfield threat. Reports are that as well as his catching abilities; Clark has shown wiliness to block along with Luke Stocker who is also taking first team snaps. As mentioned earlier, Doug Martin has been better than expected. The Boise State product has looked to be the clear front-runner in the running back race, and day four proved no different. As well as his elusive running skills, turning five-yard gains to ten, he’s also showing his ability to pass block, which is something Lagarrette Blount struggled with last year. Of course at the end of the day, the outcome of the season will ride heavily on the shoulders of Josh Freeman. We have seen his ability in the past, and now with a more disciplined coaching staff, more offensive threats around him, and a slimmer physique; as Bucs fans, we’ve got some hope for a good 2012 offense. With all of that being said about the offense, Coach Greg Schiano was extra impressed with our defense Yesterday, and in particular, linebackers. As of now, Foster, David, and Black are the starting linebackers, and this disciplinary coaching seems to be helping them. Mason Foster will now be going into his second year, and along with an entire off-season, he should be more comfortable manning the defense. Lavonte David will be interesting to watch, in a sense that he is the rookie of the corps, and has high expectations. Out of Nebraska, he was known as a tackling machine. As a Will linebacker in the 4-3/ Tampa 2 defense, it’s imperative for him to show quickness, as well as great pass coverage skills to go along with his tackling. Lastly, there’s Quincy Black. To put it bluntly, he was terrible last year. Now he has a clean slate with Schiano, and will look to play up to his big contract of last year. Black has shown signs of greatness in the past, so the coaching staff will seek to bring him back to that level. Staying with defense, Adrian Clayborn has been setting the tone this training camp. His motor is unreal, and his ability to make McCoy and other d-lineman better is great for this young defense. First round pick Mark Barron looks the part. Everyone seems excited about him, and can’t wait for him to hit someone. He’ll be starting at safety along side the Buccaneers legend, Ronde Barber. It should make for a great combo, as we have a faithful veteran paired with a promising star for years to come. Overall, training camp started out sloppy, but has been improving each day. Coach Schiano called Monday’s practice “The best yet.” "I felt the effort was outstanding. We cleaned some things up, got into some situational football,” The Bucs get a break today, but get right back on the field Wednesday at 8:30.
