The Buccaneers are not moving slowly when it comes to roster moves.
Tampa, FLA – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have released wide receiver Dezmond
Briscoe, and traded defensive tackle Brian Price to the Chicago Bears.
Lets begin with the less surprising roster maneuver, Dezmond Briscoe. He has
been a problem since Greg Schiano was hired. A few months back, he was absent
from the team’s voluntary workouts for an undisclosed family matter. While
that’s understandable, the real problem was that he was recurring in the news
a lot for being involved in a reality T.V. love triangle with a basketball
player’s girlfriend. Now fast forward to training camp, reports are that he
still doesn’t have his act together.
In his second season with the team last year, after being signed off
Cincinnati’s practice squad in 2010, Briscoe had six receiving touchdowns on
an overall dismal offense. While the Bucs will likely keep a maximum of six
receivers on the team, even after the acquisition of Vincent Jackson, this still
came as a shock to Briscoe. "We were definitely surprised. Dez loved it there,"
said Erik Burkhart, Briscoe’s agent. Briscoe has since found a new home in
Washington where he will join former Buccaneers Tanard Jackson, and Raheem
Morris.
The more shocking news from One Buc Place yesterday came from the announcement
of the 23 year old, 2010 35th overall pick Brian Price being traded to the
Chicago Bears. According to the coaching staff and front office, Prices trade is
contingent on him passing a physical.
Price has had a troubled first two seasons in Tampa. Whether it is his injury
problems, or his family struggles, his stint with the Buccaneers has been tough.
A rare condition in his hamstring and pelvic areas limited him to five games as
a rookie. He is also struggling to cope with the death of his sister, which left
him physically and emotionally drained, as he required hospitalization. Along
with all of that, there was an altercation with first round pick Mark Barron
earlier in voluntary workouts that might have led to his dismissal.
This trade leaves the Bucs thin at interior lineman. With the loss of Da’Quan
Bowers possibly for the season, all eyes are now on Akoye, and Gibson to be the
“next man up” on that defensive line with McCoy and Clayborn.
In other moves:
* Linebacker Thomas Williams signed a two-year deal. Last season, his third, he
had 13 tackles in seven games (two starts) for the Panthers.
* Safety Devin Holland was waived. He appeared in four games last season, making
two tackles.
* Bowers and cornerback Derrick Roberson (undisclosed injury) were placed on the
physically unable to perform list. They can be activated at any time during the
preseason. If they begin the season on it, they must miss at least six weeks.
The Buccaneers began training camp today where it was scorching hot at One
Buccaneer Place, trying to kick off 2012 in great playing shape. Head Coach Greg
Schiano acknowledged the importance of stamina when it comes to competing in
this league.
